Being in San Diego, there were a few places still that we wanted to visit as tourists. So we set out early one beautiful day to the San Diego Harbor. The harbor is home to the U.S.S. Midway, an aircraft carrier in San Diego Harbor. At the site, there is a tribute to Bob Hope, who so bravely and generously entertained the troops overseas. The infamous "Save the Kiss" iconic photo, taken in NYC at the end of WWII, is immortalized in a huge bronze statue here.

We spent some time walking up and down the Embarcadero, or wharf, and looked at the many boats docked. There is a "harbor tour", where you can actually go on some of these vessels and explore further, but we just kept it simple. This is also where you can go on whale-watching boats and harbor tours, but we were just sight-seeing and enjoying the wharf. Our visit was on Tuesday, and the boat crashing through the pier due to mechanical failure occurred on Thursday. (You may have seen it on the news-thankfully no one died and only 3 people were injured.) For the news article, click

The harbor is very scenic, and clean! We were impressed with how clean it was. Downtown was fairly easy to navigate. After we missed the turn for the harbor, we had a little bit of an unexpected tour of the downtown area. Hahahah.

"sister ship" to the Hornblower that crashed into the Embarcadero two days after we were here. As you can see, we were busy watching the planes come in low for a landing at S.D. Airport, which is close by. |

After our tour of San Diego Harbor, we headed to Coronado to check out the famous Hotel del Coronado. It is located on one of the top beaches in the world, or so the marketing materials say. The hotel was really nice, and of course, so was the beach. There may have been more tourists there than guests.

Heading back towards Mission Bay, the views from the Coronado Bridge included some of the navy ships located in San Diego. We had one more stop on our sightseeing jaunt, and that was the Old Town area of San Diego. I will save that for the next post.
