Phelps Lake.....

Another beautiful hike to a another beautiful lake! This hike is fairly easy, and is located in the Grand Teton National Park at the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve(LSR). It is best to get there early to procure a parking space, as there are only 30. The rangers are in the parking lot, making sure everyone parks legally and leaves little room between cars so as to fit more cars. There is a special parking area for hybrids! Yeah! The visitor center is beautiful, and is some distance from the parking area to allow for a peaceful hike. Nice.

 LSR Preserve Visitor Center

thank you L.S. Rockefeller!

stunning building for a visitor center
The trail from the Visitor Center begins through a wooded area, with waterfalls and meanders along the river for a bit. The trail is well kept and well used! This is a popular easy day hike in the park. I had a wonderful chat with the ranger, and finally, I think I have a handle on my fear of running into a bear on the trail. There are several bears that live in the area that are commonly seen, but we did not see any. Actually, surprisingly, we saw very little wildlife.

so refreshingly beautiful
oop....another new one!
nice, huh?
lovely pine scent as well
The trail meanders up and down, and is very pleasantly shaded for a lot of the trail. Perfect on a sunny day! The lake itself is just gorgeous. Love these mountain lakes....they are so clear and refreshing in the middle of the mountains! And of course, the pine smell is a treat too.

Part of the trail goes over a swampy meadow type area, and the trail is over a metal deck. The LSR Preserve is very well thought out and very well maintained. This Rockefeller had a vision, and the Park Service tries very hard to maintain it.

really well managed hiking trails
Once again, we were at the lake, enjoying beautiful views. Its so tempting to just wade right in.....

another viewpoint
nice!
should I just take a little dip?
my favorite....mountain lake surrounded by pines
We continued on a little further to Huckleberry Point, which was a nice offshoot into the lake. A perfect spot to sit for a bit, snack (of course) and just admire the view away from it all. The sun was shining full force by the time we got there. Did I mention I was tempted to take a dip? Hahahha.

this is just beautiful
On the way back, we had totally different views of a different area of the lake. The water looked really shallow and also looked to be a perfect spot for moose. Didn't see any though!

Another nice feature along this trail.....bathrooms! And the bathrooms are really clean! They are compost toilets, and don't smell at all. I know that is probably too much information, but wow!!!! Much appreciated on the trail!

is that a mirage? A bathroom in the middle of a hiking trail?
The views in this area were lovely....gentle nature! And the trails were not crowded due to the parking situation. If you don't get a spot, you have to wait until one opens up. That is how the crowd is somewhat managed. Good thinking!

refreshing, right?
very enjoyable hike
nice
another view
almost back to the Visitor Center
On our way back to the Visitor Center, our paths crossed with this guy. Not sure if it was an elk or a very large deer. We are still debating that....hahahaha.

oh, hello!
a personal stop sign
heading back to the parking lot
One of the only pitfalls of this hike is the road to get there. It is amazingly rough. Not sure if you can appreciate the sinkholes  potholes we encountered for a couple of miles on Moose-Wilson Road.

Moose-Wilson Road....just a little rough!
Driving along the mountains on the way back to the campground, just had to take this photo of the "west". It was so....well.....western! Speaking of the wild west, we are off to the rodeo!

Jackson Hole.....

Our last full day at Colter Bay was raw and drizzly, so no last swim in our "swimming hole". The day started pretty wet...for other reasons. Our water hookup spout broke early in the morning, and we had our own geyser! Yikes!! I was doing my early morning knitting while Tom slept in a bit and heard something, which I thought was a vacuum from the neighbor, but another nice neighbor knocked on our door to alert us to our situation. Wow! There was water shooting out of the spout full force. This campground had great water pressure too. The top had blown out of the water spout. I quickly went to the office, which had just opened, and she sent for the maintenance men. Within a half hour, the plumber was there and replaced the spout. I guess the campground is on the old side; after that we did notice some of the water connections at other campsites were new. Whew!

a little cold!
our Jackson Lake swimming hole!
On the short walk back from the beach, we noticed more new flowers. Not sure if they are actual flowers or weeds, but still they were pretty.

new to us flowers
We spent some time at the cafe near the visitor center on site, what we affectionately referred to as the "internet cafe". It was the only place in the entire Colter Bay campground/visitor center hub that had decent internet. Spotty cell service, but at least the internet was faster here. We weren't the only ones onto that...as there were often a few of us with our computers hanging out for a couple of hours. Hahaha.

catching up
Once we got back to the camper, it was still freezing.....the kind of raw and chilly conditions that get to ya. So, we had a nice pot of herbal tea, which you can see that Tom really enjoyed. Hahah. We actually had to turn the heat on.

its pretty cold today!
my favorite herbal tea!
The next day, we took the long drive (one hour) to Jackson Hole....the land of internet and cell phone! Yippee. AND TV!!! We haven't had TV since June, so Tom we were thrilled. The campground is situated at the end of the town, and is nestled between the mountains. Either way you look from the camper, you see the mountains. We are staying at the Virginian, which also has a hotel and swimming pool, restaurant, etc. The rooms are right next to the campground, and are in several different buildings, so even though the hotel is separate, the rooms are not too far away from the camping. Nice if you have visitors!!
the hotel rooms are right down this lane
mountains on both sides-we are nestled in
a view of some of the rooms....2 seconds away....(would have been a good "sister" trip you guys!)
another building of rooms
There is a walkway through to the pool, which is heated and looks very inviting. I will let you know how that is. I'm so spoiled from swimming in Jackson Lake, with the gorgeous view of the mountains. But this looks nice to me too-lap swimming in my immediate future!

nice surroundings
After we set up the camper and settled in, I spent a lot of time on the phone catching up! It was great to have the cell service. We really missed it the last month. Not that I'm complaining....the campsite was awesome at Colter Bay.....but I guess I am more dependent on cell/internet than I thought! We were even able to do Google Hangout with the kids!!! I live for that!!

the Virginian restaurant, which we probably won't check out
close campsites here
For a special treat on our "moving in day", we decided to have pizza and watch football...I know....but the things you take for granted! Anyway, we decided to get the pizza at Teton Village, not far from us. While we waited for the pizza, we walked around the complex. There was a concert going on, that attracted lots of folks. What a gorgeous setting for an outdoor concert. I think there are free concerts every Sunday. Nice.

We also checked out some of the shops while waiting for the pizza. I was attracted to the sign that said "wool", but no....no wool. It was a clothing store. While we were there, we also checked out any hiking on site. Tom wants to hike to the top and take the tram down. (hahah....you go....I'll meet ya!). And that's why he's so skinny, and I'm not! Ugh!!

check out the rooms above the shops .... nice!
does that say "wool"
gathering info
On the way back home to our new campground, the weather took a turn. We made it back just in time before the skies opened up. What a simple pleasure for Tom.....pizza, beer and football! He was so happy!!!

back at the campground
aahhhhh....its the simple things
Snow King Mountain Ski Resort is right behind us (and down the block). Our first morning in Jackson, we decided to check out the hiking and biking right in Jackson. We went on an exploratory trip to view our options. Everyone is just so nice, I might add!

checking out Snow King for future hikes
Right behind our campground is a trail access. The trail goes up the mountain a bit, and then crosses over, so you get a great view of the town below. It is a multi-use trail, so you really have to watch out for mountain bikers. We could see our "home" from the hill. It was a good trail, with lots of views of the town and the mountains across the way.

really nice trail! so close to the campground!

nice neighborhood
Walking a little further, the trail winds around and back down, and drops you off in a beautiful neighborhood. We walked through on a paved trail, specifically for walkers/bikers, and walked back to the campground. It was a good way to get our bearings. We walked along a creek for a bit....and spotted some kids having a great time tubing. They even had their dog along...and he looked like he was having a great time too.

the river runs through it
such clear, sparkling water
nice
3 different cascades
these kids are having a ball...see their dog in the water too?
we were up there
Right across the street from our "home" is the library. We will be checking that out one night. I know....wild and crazy, huh? Its the Teton County library, and we want to see how it compares to the Morris County library, which we just love. We noticed that it gets a lot of traffic. Its the latest...its the greatest...its the library!

across from the campground
Since we were spending the day food shopping, getting organized and oriented, and planning future travels, I put a pot of chili on the stove to freeze for those days when there's no time to cook. Especially travel days. Tom was helping too....he was working hard grilling our dinner outside. Hahaha.

yum!
