Passing through on our way to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, we spotted a few elk. Lots of big guys out there! We haven't seen all that many elk, considering how many there are in Yellowstone.

The buffalo were still there in the valley, and we stopped at a turn out to look with the binoculars. A family of 4 decided to walk down a little (wildlife?) trail towards the bison in the meadow. The rest of us were watching the meadow, when another car pulled up and made us all aware of the buffalo running down the hill behind us. The family quickly ran back up to their car. Yikes!

wow...almost witnessed an encounter...buffalo vs. family from Michigan |
We drove past the more of the bison herd, following the Lamar River, and spotted some antelope closer to the river. At first, we only saw the 3 adult antelope, but then one of the babies stood up. They must have been taking naps in the tall grass, because suddenly all 3 babies stood up and the group headed out.

Heading back to our campground, we drove back over the mountain with all the beautiful scenic views and the deep valleys alongside the road. We came upon a bear jam, and luckily found a safe parking spot in a turnout. We walked down the road a bit to where the ranger and a ton of people were entranced, and ...it was a mom and 2 cubs! We only saw one cub. The other remained under the tree. We were treated to a little action by this young family and I actually got some of it on a short video. You may want to enlarge the pictures.

We were so thrilled to have witnessed that little bear activity. I know, we are "just wild and crazy". Haha. On the drive back past the Canyon area, we stopped again for some scenic shots of the canyon from afar.
